Gene therapy is currently being used for research purposes. It is used to treat a type of skin cancer called melanoma, a neuromuscular disorder called spinal muscular atrophy, and a rare form of eye disorder called Leber congenital amaurosis. Gene therapy is also used to treat different forms of blood cancer like multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Lifestyle disorders like heart diseases and diabetes can also be treated using gene therapy.
