Are fingerprints determined by genetics?

Just like many other complex traits, the debate is still on whether fingerprints are determined by genetics. Studies point out that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in fingerprint inheritance. The fingerprints of an individual are the unique patterns found on the skin ridges (called dermatoglyphs) on the finger pads. These ridges are found on the toes, palms of hands, and soles of the feet. These ridges may seem similar in having a basic whorl, loop and arch but the patterns are very specific to an individual.
