Moles are extensions of skin cells called melanocytes. Due to their benign nature, moles and their inheritance pattern has not been adequately studied by researchers. The tendency to develop moles and the number of moles that a person seems to be inherited. However, on exposure to sunlight (ultraviolet radiations), some people develop more moles. Mole formation may also be due to hormonal changes that occur during adolescence and pregnancy.
